David Helms (Champ Flight) Robert Yopp (A Flight) Chris Jenkins (B Flight) William Buie ( C Flight)
After 2 snow outs Charlotte National hosted the eGolf Amateur Tour in fine style with 76 degree temperatures. Ninety six players battled it out on Saturday enjoying the pick day of the year thus far. Thanks too all the staff at Charlotte National for perfect greens with some new pin locations. We look forward to coming back in August with green fairways and ruff.
Championship Flight:
David Helms started the day out fast with birdies at one and four and turned the front nine at 35. On the back nine David continued to strike the ball well and just missed birdie putts. His only blemish was a bogey at the tough par three 16th. Joe Jaspers playing in David’s group was behind all day until Joe hit a perfect 5 iron to within four feet on the 16th. After Jaspers made his birdie putt the two players finished tied for first place at even par 72. Sudden-death playoff began and ended at the 18th with Helms making par and Jaspers a bogey. Congrats to David on his first victory of the season. Rounding out the top four were Michael Bailey who nipped out Todd McPherson on the card for 3rd place. Both players shot 74’s.
A Flight:
Robert Yopp has been frustrated with his game all winter but on Saturday Yopp parlayed his home course knowledge and great iron play into his first victory of the season. Robert fired a smooth 76 which included an even par front nine of 36. Neal Gaston continues his stellar play this year on tour as he finished just one shot behind Yopp with a second place 77. Three players fired 79’s on Saturday but it was Stan Lucas beating out Jason Breedlove for third. Breedlove did cash fourth place while Rex Mills ended in fifth.
B Flight:
Chris Jenkins played the round of his life on tour Saturday as he blistered the course with a winning score of 76. Chris will bear watching to see if his continued improvement warrants a move up to A Flight. Congrats to Chris on his tour best score. Geof Smith almost did was he could not last season; Win! Had it not been for Jenkins career round Geof would have finally been hosting the eGolf Amateur Tour victory stein but Geof’s 79 was good enough for second and looks forward to next week at CC of Salisbury. Dennis Reams debut went well as his finished in third place with 80 while tour vet Mike Cavillino cashed for the first time this year with a fourth place 82.
C Flight:
William Buie captured the C flight crown with an 83 on Saturday. Buie beat out the second place finisher by three shots is excited to be promoted to B flight for this weeks tourney at CC of Salisbury. Congrats on your first win of the season William. The Triad’s Jack Frazier and Jason Smith both cashed with Frazier getting second with and 86 and Smith third firing an 87. Ken Burke became a new Papa this week so it was a bit of surprise for Ken when he finished in 4th place with 88. Lack of sleep must make for a better putting stroke hey Ken.
The tours next stop will take us to the old Donald Ross gem CC of Salisbury on March 27th a 1:00pm shotgun start. The Charlotte Senior Tour just had a tourney here on Wednesday and the greens were comparable to Augusta. We will slow them down a touch for Saturday as they were about a 12.8 on Wednesday. Please email me back (Yes or No) if you wish to get entered.
Practice rounds will be only $35 (Tuesday-Thursday only!) for all participants. Show your tour card to get the rate please.
