The Charleston Tour ascended HWY 17 to one of our favorite stops of the year, Caledonia Golf and Fish Club. Today we found out why it is ranked in the top 100 every year. The course was in fantastic shape, the greens were true and the weather was just about right!
The Champ flight had some very nice play. Mike Cobb jumped out to the none hole lead with an even par 35 which was one shot clear of Stephen Pippin and Dan Constatino The back nine proved tough as always and Mike’s steady two over par held off the hard charging Josh Barker to win by two shots, 72 to 74. Josh finished in a 4 way tie but won the back nine score card playoff.
The A flight was quite the battle as Turner Calhoun took a 1 stroke lead over Greg Priest and Gavin Genthert. Gavin’s 3 over back nine for a round of 75 was enough to hold off Turner (76), Greg Priest (77) and Wes Mahaffeny (78)
The B flight always seems to come down to the last hole. Brandon Hall and Tim Sumption jumped out to a 1 shot lead after the front 9 with 3 over par’s 38 over Johnnie Cooper and David Deese who both fired 39’s on the front. If they thought the were in a 4 way battle, they were sadly mistaken as Dustin Yager fired a 1 over par 37 on the back nine for a great round of 78. He finished with a 1 shot victory over Tim Sumption (79). Justin Gabel posted a solid 80 for third, one shot Infront of David Deese, (81)
The C flight was the one flight that had a winner with a little cushion. Mike Hale from the Tidewater Tour came and represented by firing a very nice round of 81. Joseph Deese and Steven Shadwick were in the battle- the battle for second with Joseph securing the second-place finish with a back nine score of 45 to Steven’s 48.
The D flight was also a very tight match till the end. Kent Barker and Brad young both fired 41’s on the front for a 1 up lead over Jay Johnston and Chris Hernandez. The story would be a tale of the back 9. It was Kent barker’s story to tell as he birdied the very tricky par three 17 hole to pull even with Brad Young. The 18th hole at Caledonia is a very diabolic hole, bringing water into play on your 1st, 2nd and sometimes 3rd shot!! Kent made a very nice 5 on the 18th to secure a 1 shot victory over Brad Young!
The Charleston Tour headed over to Charleston National on Sat Mar, 7th. The course was in great shape, the weather was just about perfect and there was some nice golf played.
Champ Flight saw Derek Bland and Mason Axline battle all day matching each others scorecard till the final hole. It was a solid par by Derek that proved to be the difference as he won by one shot (77-78) over Mason
The A flight saw Joshua Lail put on steady show with identical scores of 37 on the front nine and the back nine to take home a three shot victory over Mark Ducker (77)
The B flight had lead changes all day long till Wes Mahaffey decided good golf can be played on both nines.Wes fired a smooth 6 over par 78 to claim the victory by a shot over Phil Cala. Eric Hill one of the many leaders through the day rounded out the top 3 with a very nice 81
The C flight also had some great play as Steven Shadwick and James Simon both posted very nice rounds of 86. Although we prefer an on-the-course playoff, there just wasn’t enough daylight so we had to go to a scorecard playoff with James back nine score of 38 to Stevens’s 42 determined the winner. James carded three birdies on the back nine including 18 to get into the scorecard playoff.
The D flight had Pat Henry glad he made the trip down from the Columbia Tour as Pat posted a an 89 for a 7 shot victory over newcomer Ben Khenglawt.
Overall it was a great day and really is a good sign of things to come for this year as we are seeing some great battles.
