Lake Course
The first of the two 18-hole courses that make up the Carolina Trace private golf community is the Lake Course. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., the Lake Course opened for play in 1971. Winding around the 315-acre Lake Trace, the Lake Course's captivating views can make maintaining focus on one's golf game exceedingly difficult.
The site of the US Women's Open Sectional Qualifier for six consecutive years (2009-2014), the Lake Course is also proud to have hosted the North Carolina Super Senior Amateur State Championship in 2013 and the North Carolina Women's Senior State Amateur Championship in 2000.
Each hole provides five sets of tees, Black, Blue, White, Gold, and Red, for players of all skill levels. The Black tees are sloped at 139 and the Red tees at 124. The generous-sized fairways are Bermuda grass with the greens featuring Mini-Verde, an ultra-dwarf Bermuda. The Lake Course greens were renovated with Mini-Verde in 2011.
The Lake Course layout features picturesque views accompanied by championship designs, notably on the 6th and 8th holes, each a par three with dramatic downhill tee shots. The 13th hole is also a par three, with the vast expanse of Lake Trace as a panoramic background. Two par fives on the back nine, the 14th and 18th holes provide risk-reward options for charging the green in two big shots. Both holes are bordered by water on one side with an inlet of Lake Trace to traverse on the second shot. An added challenge to the 18th hole is the 80-foot drop in elevation over its 507-yard layout.
In 2015, the Lake Course went through a major renovation guided by renowned golf course architect David Whelchel. Tweaks touched all aspects of the course aside from greens: removal of trees for improved sightlines, re-contouring of fairways, new cart paths, bunker additions and removals, and tee box leveling and expansion.

Quail Ridge "Jimmy Smith Memorial"
June 13, 2026
The Golfweek Central Carolina Tour put on The Jimmy Smith Memorial event at The Golf Club at Quail Ridge in Sanford on Saturday June 13th. The temperature was very warm, as were quite a few players.
In the Champ flight, eighteen holes of golf failed to produce a winner as Aaron Bayles and Chris Gooch turned in matching scorecards with two over par 74’s. That meant an on course playoff was required to determine a winner. Aaron and Chris loaded up and took off for hole one. After both players teed off and hit their second shots they arrived at the first green. Chris made bogie, while Aaron rolled in a par putt to take the victory. Great golf Aaron! Kyle Moffett carded 80 to wrap up third place, while Justin Applebaum recorded 82 to grab fourth place. Stephen Pippin rounded out the top five scoring with a round of 83.
Mike Martin fired an excellent round of two over par 74 in the A flight to capture a three shot victory. It was Mike’s first win this season. Outstanding golf Mike! Our very own Tour Director Chuck Smith was runner up with a 77, while Kirby Moffitt placed third with his score of 78. Fourth place became a T4 as Juan Sanders and Kerney Black reported to the scoring table with identical rounds of 79.
In the B flight, Shawn Cacioppo kept his strong season rolling along by shooting an excellent round of 78 to win by a single stroke. Well played Shawn! The runner up slot with a score of 79 was claimed by Ricky Urbach visiting from the Charlotte Tour, while Jacob Gregory picked up a third place finish with a round of 80. Steven Zannos pulled down fourth place with an 82, and David Pitt closed out the top five scores with an 84.
JD Osbourne visiting from the Charlotte Tour, made his drive worthwhile as he recorded an excellent round of 82 in the C flight to capture the win by a slim single shot. Awesome golf JD! Mike Groom narrowly missed a playoff with his 83 while taking runner up honors, as Nick Dalessandro finished in third place with his score of 87. Justin Cook from the Charlotte Tour bagged fourth place by carding 88, and Melvin Jenkins’s round of 89 placed him into fifth.
In the D flight, Danny Pyle's hot driver put him into good scoring positions all day. He took advantage of those positions to fire an excellent round of 82 and grab the win. Excellent golf Danny! Miles Barfield came in from the Eastern NC Tour and shot 84 to end the day in second place. Third place was a T3 as Michael Kessler, and our other very own Tour Director Sola Edwards, finished their day with a couple of 88’s. Tommy Nolan in town from the Columbia SC Tour turned in a score of 95 in fifth place.

In the A flight, Riley Gooch and Spurling Cook mirrored each other all weekend as both players posted identical rounds of 77-75-152 requiring an on course playoff. Riley and Spurling took off for hole one to put an end to this incredible tie once and for all. It didn’t get done on the first hole as they tied yet another hole so off to hole two they went. Spurling’s bogie was not quite good enough as Riley rolled in his par putt to finally take hold of the victory. Awesome golf Riley, and Congrats! Meanwhile, third place was a three way tie with Roger Stevenson posting 82-76-158, David Stringer (Charlotte) shooting 80-78-158, and Kerney Black carding 78-80-158. Fourth place was a T4 as Peter Brenner (Charlotte) carded 87-84-171, together with Michael Smith’s (Charlotte) 82-89-171. Owen Strouse (Charlotte) finished alone in sixth place with scores of 89-84-173.
In the D flight, Nick Dalessandro not only led wire to wire, but he came out of the gate on day two like a Kentucky Derby thoroughbred, leaving the competition in the dust. Nick’s 89-79-168 produced a 14 shot swing and victory. Impressive golf Nick! Josh Simmons from the Atlanta GA Tour held on to the runner up spot shooting 94-88-182. Third place became a T3 when Michael Kessler 95-88-183 and Corey Reeder (Charlotte) 89-94-183 ended the event with matching totals. Fourth place was snagged by Tour Director Chuck Smith with his round of 85, and Juan Sanders rounded out the top five scoring with an 88.
In the B flight, Frederick Levine and James Shoemaker shot identical scores of 84, requiring an on course sudden victory playoff. Frederick and James took off for hole one to begin the Tour Manual mandated playoff. Both players found the fairway off the tee. James’s approach shot came up just short. But Frederick hit a towering shot that came to rest just three feet from the cup. James chipped on, but his par putt slid by the hole. Frederick lined up his birdie putt and casually dropped it into the bottom of the hole for the victory. Great golf Fred! Naturally Jim’s 84 was the runner up score, while David Pitt’s 86 left him alone in third place.
