The Columbia and Charleston Tours held their fifth annual
Orangeburg Masters on Masters Saturday and the weather was perfect, the greens
super and the golf was hot!
The Champ Flight had a smallish field for some reason this
tournament. It was a tough battle all
day as Jonathan Mullane, Mike Cobb and Steve French all had a share of the lead
at some point. Mike had a one-shot lead
heading into hole 16 but his tee shot hit a tree and the ball was never found,
he wound up with a double bogie six which gave Steve French a 1 shot lead which
he never relinquished to take top honors with a smooth round of 73 to Mike’s 74
and Jonathan’s 75 rounding out the top three
The A flight also had a tough
battle all day. Sean Kenneck, Kevin
Lyles, and Mike Griggs all held the top spot at one point. Sean Kenneck played steady and made the putts
this time around and wound up with a 2-shot victory (77-79 over Glenn Powell
whose trusty flat stick let him down this time around. Ron Cosgrove and Mike Griggs tied for third
with smooth rounds of 80 with Ron winning the score card playoff to take home
third place winnings.
The B flight had some stellar play
as well as both Jimmy Jones and Michael Menna fired rounds of 79 to tie for the
top spot. Unfortunately for Michael he
had to leave early for another function later that afternoon so instead of an
on-the-course playoff, Jimmy was declared the winner. Jason Courtney and Crys Peyton both tied for
third with Jason’s back nine score of 42 to Crys’ 43 proved to be the winner on
the scorecard playoff.
The C flight saw the return to the
winner’s circle for veteran Lynn Rhode who fired a very nice round of 82 to
cruise to a three-shot victory over steady Julie Johnson who posted a solid
round of 85. New Comer Allen Thomkins
rounded out the top three with an 88 in his first event.
The D flight saw Charlie Cook play
some very nice golf as Charlie Posted a solid 86 for a two-sot victory over
Columbia’s Teyler Berry who fired a smooth 88 for his second-place finish. Youngster Cody Peyton followed in his dad’s
footsteps by taking home third place.
Our next scheduled event is three
weeks away at this same golf course, Our Monday Special on May 3rd. There is plenty of room so please sign up
early.
