Starting our 17th season in Charlotte the tours first event in February always hosts a variety of conditions to kick the season off. Yesterday at Carolina Lakes was no exception as the rain stopped early morning but the cold and wind stuck around. Thanks to Darrell Ewing and the staff at Carolina Lakes for getting the course (Bunkers and greens especially) in as good of shape as they would be in early spring. The Greens got great comments from the players on being smooth and fast.
Championship Flight:
Whether you thought you were playing in Scotland or Charlotte to Joe Jaspers it was just another day in the park. While most players struggled with the cold windy conditions Jaspers just cruised through the front nine with four birdies en route to a 3 under par 33. On the back nine Joe bogied the 12th hole but then birdied 14, 17 & 18 to finish the day with a 5 under par 67.
For Jaspers it will be the first of many wins on tour this season I’m sure he will remain the man to beat each Saturday in 2011. Newcomer Greg Harrold started his round at the second hole and was even par after the 16th with three to play. Then Harrold boomed a drive on the 500 yard par five 17th and hit sand wedge in to within 15 feet for Eagle. You read that right I said sand wedge for his second shot. Bill Hall, one of Greg’s playing partners, compares his length to JB Holmes and Bubba Watson. After making birdie at 17 he finished the day by birding 18 and #1 for a 3 under par total of 69 and second place money. Michael Bailey fired a 75 for third and John White's 76 grabbed fourth place.
A Flight:
A Flight was bunched up as always with 8 players finishing within two shots on Saturday. After 18 holes a winner was still not decided as Dennis Reames and Greg McCoy stood tied with 80’s. They went to the par 4 second hole to start their playoff and Greg McCoy quickly jammed it to within 3 feet for birdie but his winning putt just slipped by on the low side. On the next hole the par 5 third Reames played the hole perfectly making birdie for the victory. Right behind Reames and McCoy was Kevin Ronan winning third place and Mike Weber fourth; both players shot 81.
B Flight:
B Flight also was decided in Sudden-Death as Dean Hearn and Western Piedmonts David Hargett stood tied at 80. One the first playoff hole Hargett grabbed victory form Hearn with a solid par 4. Last years point’s winner fired his normal 82 on Saturday good enough for third place money. Adam Wilson cashed fourth place with 85.
C Flight:
Dana Greer has played on tour for several years now and finally broke through for his first tour victory at Carolina Lakes. Greer posted a smooth 85 and just beat out newcomer Matt Meneely who finished in second place with 86. Scott Grigg grabbed third with 90 and old tour veteran John Rinaldi rounded out the top 4 places with 91.
