Warrior Hosts again in 2019.
Saturday August 17th, 2019
China Grove, NC
The Warrior Golf Club hosted the Golfweek Am Tour for the
first time in a few years. Warrior had
been a recurring event in the early years of the tour and has made a successful
return. Warrior stepped up this year
when our event at Cabarrus CC had to be cancelled due to a Maintenance project
that was happening this same weekend.
The new Champion Bermuda greens did not disappoint, and the improvements
made at the course over the past few years has improved the quality of the
course greatly.
It was a hot and muggy afternoon which caused some severe
weather to pop up in the late afternoon.
As a result, the golfers were pulled from the course to wait out the
passing storm. After about an hour delay
the golfers returned to finish the round.
In the Champ Flight, Randy Dockins takes home the win with a
2 over par 73 (+2) and claim his first victory in 2019. Mark Ballew takes home 2nd place with a round
of 74 (+3). John Hefferenan and Scott Patnode tied with scores of 76 (5), but
John wins the scorecard playoff to take 3rd.
Scott had to settle for 4th.
In the A Flight, Wesley Jones was able to hold it together
on the back 9 at this event to claim vicotry shooting 74 (+3) and winning by 2
shots. Phil VanGeersdaelen shoots Even
par on his last 9 holes to claim second shooting 76 (+5). Vincent Curtis claims 3rd place winning a
scorecard playoff over Marc Janse Van Rensburg, both players shooting 79 (+8)
In the B Flight, 18 holes just was not enough to determine a
victor. John Torres and Michael Guarino
tied at 78 (+7). After both players
bogied the 18th to start the playoff, they went back to 18 once more. John hit a phenomenal approach shot to setup
the victory. John indicated that the win
was dedicated to his new sons, "Curt" and "Damien" who
joined his family this year and have made a tremendous impact on John and his
wife since they have arrived. 3rd place
went to Allen Hagen shooting 79 (+8) and beating out Roger Stevenson on a
scorecard playoff.
In the C Flight, Bradley leak was waiting in the clubhouse
assuming that he had lost by a shot as the current leader only had one to play
and a 1 shot lead. Well, as fate would
have it, the leader made double bogie and provided the margin of victory that
Bradley needed. Bradley's round of 81
(+10) was one shot better than runner-up Hector Moreno who shot 82 (+11). I'm sure that Hector new that the club did
not stock Corona beer and as a result would have nothing to put in the winning
trophy. 3rd place goes to Jon Christie
shooting 83 (+12) and 4th goes to Mark Langford shooting 85 (+14).
In the D Flight, Kevin Russell wins with a career round of
84 (+13) and a promotion to the C Flight.
Tom Gould wins a scorecard playoff with Vince Johnson for second after
both players shot 93 (+22).
Thanks to all who came out for this event. We have one single day tournament remaining
for the year at Lancaster Golf Club (8/31) and our Local Finals in September.
Lancaster has a maximum field of 96 players and we currently have close to 80
registered and paid for this event, so I expect a sellout. The Local Finals is set for the middle of
September and we are close to half full.
Please ensure that you have paid for this event as well to secure your
spot.
Thank you for your continued support
