For the first time ever in tour history we had back to back playoffs by the same 2 players. At Edgewater Jim Aughtry defeated Joe Jaspers in a 2 hole sudden-death playoff and yesterday Jaspers got revenge beating Aughtry in a 4 hole playoff. Jaspers was the benefactor of an uncharacteristically bad shot by one of the best ball strikers’ on tour to grab his victory.
The day started quickly for Aughtry as he had the putter rolling and cruised to a 4 under 32 on the front side. Jim stumbled a bit on the back nine bogeying both the par fives and doubling the par three 16th. Aughtry then righted the ship with birdie at 17 and finished his round at one under par 71. Jaspers also started hot with a 33 front nine followed by a 38 back nine for the tie.
For Jaspers it was his second win in three starts and his only loss coming to Aughtry in sudden-death. David Helms and Dave Schmidt only missed the playoff by one shot as they both finished at even par 72’s. Helms beat out Schmidt on the card for third place after Schmidt had just doubled his final hole the par four 18th.
A Flight:
Brian Thomas used his local knowledge to capture his first win of the season as he fired a three over par 75 on Saturday. Stan Lucas and Dennis Reames finished two shots back at 77 with Lucas winning second place on the card. Andrew Chappuis also made his season debut by posting a fourth place finish at 78.
B Flight:
Dean Hearn won by four shots with a 75 and also gladly accepted his promotion to A Flight. Geof Smith was second with 79 and always sends emails to me with "Future Tour Winner" in his signature. Saturday surely looked like Smith would finally break through for his first tour victory but Hearn posted the last card in B flight and made Smith wait a little longer to change his quote. Phil Vangeersdalen & Robert Winfrey finished the day at 80 but it was VanGeersdaelen cashing in for third place beating out Winfrey on the card playoff.
C Flight:
Matt Crates finally got his first victory on tour and carded his best ever score to do it. Crates having played for over 4 years made sure Saturday he would be lifting the Crystal Stein as he smoked the field with an 82. Jeff Cottom finished three shots back at 85, while John Rinaldi at 86 and Sindo Mayor at 88 rounded out the top four spots.
D Flight:
The first ever Charlotte Tour "D"Flight winner belongs to Todd McGhee with 95. Mike Hill’s 98 got him second while Keith Bowker and Dan Doyle tied for 3rd with 108’s.
