What appeared to be a
very questionable weather outlook for Saturday turned out to be a very nice
day. The early clouds dissipated and the sun came out to greet the players as
they made their way around the Palisades Country Club. Before I get to the
scoring recap, I want to point out the biggest news of the day, NO SUPER SKIN
payout! as all holes were tied by individuals participating in the Super Skins
pots...Thanks to Bradley Leak (Hole 5) and Vince Johnson (Hole 16) who both
made Eagles on the day but decided not to enter the super skins pots. (Yes they
did win their Flight skins) As a result, we will carry over $840 to our next
tournament at the Peninsula on 5/30/2017. (TUESDAY after Memorial Day)
In the Championship flight, It was our 2017 National Champion, Jay Barnes
taking top honors on the day with a 4 under par round of 68. Jay's only blemish
on the card came on his last hole #18. Jim Aughtry continued his strong play
with a 2 under par round of 70 which was good enough for second. Joe Jasper
took home 3rd with an even par round of 72 and rounding out the top 4 was Wally
Love with a 2 over par 74.
In the A Flight, it was a Tomas Whitley, who plays out of Atlanta, that took
home the top prize. Thomas shot a 4 over par round of 76. Second place went to
Tom Chambers with a 6 over par round of 78, Tom's continued success this year
has him trending close to the Flight cut off and will be making his debut in
the Championship flight very soon. Third place went to Chad Sherill with a 79,
but don't feel too bad for Chad as he took home the only Champ/A flight skin
worth $370. Rounding out the top 4 was Paul Aschmann with a round of 80.
In the B flight, it was long time tour member, Nolan Elenz who got off to a
blazing start early in his round. After a bogie on his first hole (9), he came
back with birdies on #11, #12, #15 and 17 to play his first nine hole in 2
under par. His final nine brought him back to the field but still won with a
score of 80. Second Place went to Mason Hagen with a round of 83. Mason got in
the tournament as a last-minute entry on Friday and played his final tournament
for a while as he joins the Air Force in the coming weeks. Mason,
congratulations and we all wish you success, health and happiness in your
upcoming military career. 3rd, 4th and 5th place had to be decided with a Score
Card Playoff as we had 3 players tied at 84. Matt Crates took home 3rd, Rengan
Srinivasan 4th and Dan Boeving 5th. Rounding out the final 6 places was Terry
Upright who again could not back up his claim, when checking in, that he was
going to take home 1st place.
In the C Flight, it was Gene Bass taking home 1st place with a round of 88.
John Andersen took home second with a round of 90. Two players tied at 91 and
3rd went to Michael Gaurino and 4th went to Dirk Krause.
In the D Flight, it was Vince Johnson who DID back up his claim in an email to
me that he was going to take home the top prize this week. Vince's round of 90
was 6 strokes better than Tour Newcomer, Richard Zonjic who shot 96. Bradley Leak
rounded out the top three places by beating Derek Kemp ins a scorecard playoff.
