Erik Andrews (Champ Flight) Andrew Chappuis (A Flight) Neal Gaston (B Flight) Dean Barron (C Flight)
The third time was finally a charm after 2 previous snow outs. Finally the 2010 season got underway Saturday on a Chamber of Commerce day. Edgewater GC in Lancaster, SC was in perfect shape and believe it or not we even got to ride on the fairways. Thanks to Jeremy Allen and all his staff for getting the course in suburb playing conditions. If you have not ever played Edgewater make sure you put it on your must play list for this year, you will be very happy you did.
Championship Flight:
Tour veteran Erik Andrews won for the first time ever on tour. Erik did cash some last season as his game began to show steady improvement, but Saturday was a welcomed surprise this early in the year. Andrews shot 37 on the front side and even par 36 on the back nine to beat out Jim Aughtry by one shot. Last years points winner; Aughtry fired a 74 Saturday and would have been in a sudden-death playoff had it not been for a bogey at the 18th hole. Todd McPherson continues to nock on the door and finished in third place with a smooth 75. McPherson is also looking for his first ever tour victory which looks to be just around the corner. Rounding out the top five was Alex Brenner and Peter Kotsokalis at 77. Alex beat out Peter on the scorecard playoff for 4th place.
A Flight:
Andrew Chappuis started out fine on his front nine shooting 39 but then a birdie on 10 and another on 17 help him to shoot a one under par 35 on the difficult back nine at Edgewater. Capturing the first event of the season inspired Andrew to take the next step and move on up now to Championship Flight for the 2010 season. Good luck Drew we all happy on your continued great play. With Chappuis coming in late Greg Ries and Mike Priester were getting ready for sudden-death playoff until Drew score was posted. Both Ries and Priester fired 80’s on Saturday and it was Ries nipping Priester on the card for second. Two newcomers to the eGolf Amateur Tour rounded out the top five spots. Mike Sheer and Jeff Moss did not get nerves in there maiden event as they both shot a pair of 81’s to start there seasons off on the right foot.
B Flight:
Neal Gaston, also a first timer to the tour, blistered the B flight field by 5 shots enroot to his victory with a 76. Neal will graciously receive a battlefield promotion and will be playing in A Flight at Carolina Lakes on March 6th. Congrats Neal on your great round and continued improvement in A Flight. 81 proved to be the right number for the rest of the field as three players posted this number. Jimmy Chapman, Scott Meckes and Scott Ide all tied for second place but Chapman got both of them on the card playoff. Meckes and Ide battled all day in the same group but it was Scott’s back nine that really got him third place as he fired a blistering one over par 37 to Ides’ 40. Meckes took his hot back nine right to the Black-eyed-Peas concert, hope it was a great show. Rounding out the top five in “B†were Jerry York and Tim Stahlschmidt at 84.
C Flight:
Dean Barron started out hot Saturday and hung in on the back nine to get the victory with an 84. Right behind Barron was Jeff Gracer and Nolan Elenz at 86. Gracer nipped Elenz on the card for second place which Nolan’s round consisted of 3 triples a birdie and a big Eagle on the par 5 17th. Nolan may have lost on the card but his crazy round also produced 2 skins worth $120. Last years point’s winner Allen Hagen wound up in forth spot with 88. These were the only C flighter’s players to break 90 at Edgewater.
The tours next stop will take us to Carolina Lakes GC on March 6th a 10:00am shotgun start. Please email me back (Yes or No) if you wish to get entered. Don’t wait to long as this event had a 10 person waiting list last year.
Look forward to seeing all of you at Carolina Lakes in Sun City.
