Jim Aughtry, Rick Sherer, Mark Day & Calvin Adair Emerald Lake Winners!
After another hour frost delay things got going but not warm at Emerald Lake GC. The second event of the 2009 season once again hosted right at 100 players competing on Saturday. Thanks to all the staff at Emerald Lake GC for getting the greens in perfect shape after a 22 degree night.
Championship Flight:
Tour veteran Jim Aughtry shot 38 on the front nine and then started the back with 3 bogies in the first four holes. Not willing to cash out yet, Aughtry new that on this cold and windy day if he could make a few birdies coming in he might have a chance. Aughtry did make some birdies at 14, 15 and 17 to finish the round at 2 over par 73 and his first victory of the year. Three players finished tied for second place at 77. Rick Tomei beat out Greg Ries for second place and Ries beat last weeks winner Dave Schmidt on the scorecard playoff.
A Flight:
Rick Scherer won on Saturday by one shot firing an 81. Rick probably would not have hosted the victory crystal had it not been for his Eagle 3 at the par 5 14th hole. Steve Oliverio finished just one back of Scherer to capture second place with an 83. Mike Harter grabbed third spot with 83 and David Trull cashed in fourth place beating out Odis Lloyd on the card with 85’s.
B Flight:
Mark Day grab his first ever title by one shot on Saturday shooting a consistent 83. Day thought he had lost the tournament when he finished with a double bogey 7 on the par 5 ninth, however it did not cost him as he won by one shot. In second place was David Hargett of the Western Piedmont Tour with 84. Greg McCoy and Scott Birtner both shot a pair of 85’s Saturday and McCoy won on the card playoff for third place.
C Flight:
Calvin Adair played the tournament round of his life by firing a smooth 81. Two players finished four shots back at 85. Dean Hearn beat out Chris Jenkins on the card playoff for second place. Tour Veteran Ken Burke rounded out the top four with 86.
The tours next stop will take us to Sun City and Carolina Lakes GC in Indian Land, SC. If you have not played here yet it is one of the best stops on tour. The course being so new does not offer any reduced practice round rates so please know ahead it will be the rack rate of $75 per player (Monday-Sunday). I highly recommend you play a practice round on this course, lots of bunkering and holes that you need to know where you are going.
Look forward to seeing all of you at Carolina Lakes on Saturday March 7th.
Also the tour plays the following week at The Club at Irish Creek on Saturday March 14th. This is the former Kannapolis CC that Davis Love redid early last year. It is a must play and we are very fortunate to get on this course. Both of these tournaments will fill up fast so don’t delay in emailing me back.
Please email me back (Yes or No) along with your name on both Carolina Lakes and Irish Creek.
