Joe Jaspers-Kevin Ronan-Vic Lawrence-Dean Hearn all win the first major of the 2009 season!
The first Major tournament of the season has the best weather of the year. Finally after frost, rain, sleet, snow Mother Nature finally gave us a reprieve for 2 days. Two sunny days over 70’s reminded all players that green grass (just any grass) is just around the corner. This 36 hole contest proved to be close in every flight with one sudden-death playoff.
Championship Flight:
Jim Aughtry came out of the gate on fire shoot a 33 on his first nine en route to a first round 5 under par 67. Chase Wilson playing with Aughtry all day with 34 on the front side and cruising along until his watery grave at the par 3 17th. Wilson made triple at 17 and double at 18 and put himself well behind Aughtry and Jaspers going into Sunday’s final round. Joe Jaspers finished with 69 on Saturday well within striking distance of Aughtry going into the final round. Sunday saw Jaspers continue to play consistently on Sunday and winning the Stonebridge Masters with another 69 and a 6 under total. Aughtry fell back into second place by bogeying his final 2 holes for a 3 under total. Matt Pozsik played consistent on both days shooting 74-73 to have his best finish on the egolf Amateur Tour. Rounding out the top five was Dave Brow at 151 and Greg Ries at 152.
A Flight:
Kevin Ronan shot an opening round 79 but roared back Sunday with 73 to win by 2 shots over Don Bridges. Ronan birdied the par 5 eighteenth hole to seal his victory. Bridges also has a tough Saturday at 81 but also matched Ronan’s 73 on Sunday to finish the 2 day tourney in second place. Chuck Wallace played consistent both days shooting 76-79-155 good for third place. Rounding out the top five was Steve French 78-78-156 and Jason Breedlove 77-80-157. Along with Ronan’s great victory came a promotion to Champ Flight which he is very excited for the challenge, also following Ronan to Champ flight will be Steve French, good luck guys!
B Flight:
Eleven year tour veteran Vic Lawrence went in to Sunday tied for first with Joe Lewis, both players shot 80’s. But it was Lawrence’s front nine on Sunday that separated himself from the rest of the field. Vic’s 36 on his first nine holes help him to a superb final round of 75. This was Vic’s first ever major win on tour and every player in B flight could not have been happier for Vic. Mark Day came from way back on Sunday to finish in second place with an 84-77-151 total. Tyler Lucas playing in the final group started slow but kept it together on the back nine to finish in third place. Terry Upright also leap-frog over a lot of player firing a 79 on Sunday for a 2 day total of 166 good enough for 4th place. Mark Day has only played golf for 4 ½ years but has obviously plays his best in tournament golf as his handicap now drops below a ten handicap giving him the graduation to A Flight. All of us applaud your great accomplishments in such a short time frame.
C Flight:
Dean Hearn and Steve Price needed extra holes to determine the winner of the Stonebridge Masters. It was Hearn making a par on the first sudden-death hole to capture his first ever major event. Both Hearn and Price ended at 168 after 36 holes. Dennis Buck tried to catch them but just came up short finish in third place at 170. John Rinaldi rounded out the top four spots at 172. Once again player improvements allow for Dean Hearn & Steve Price to get a promotion to B flight. That makes five total players “Moving Up†which they all are excited about the new challenge. We look forward to see your progression on the egolf Amateur Tour.
