Robert Surratt fires a (1) under par 71 to win at Cabarrus; Ballard, Dutcher and O’Connor also claim victory!

Robert Surratt (Champ Flight) Chad Ballard (A Flight) Rich Dutcher (B Flight) and Patrick O'Connor (C Flight) all victorious at Cabarrus CC!
Another great day “Almost†as the rains came late but we got the tourney finished. Thanks to the staff at Cabarrus on the best fairways we have played all year even with all the rain this week. The tour looks forward to coming back next year.
Congrats also goes out to Joe Jaspers on qualifying for the next stage of the US Open!
Greensboro, NC – Final results from U.S. Open Championship local qualifying hosted by the Cardinal Golf and Country Club in Greensboro, NC on Monday, May 11, 2009 (6822 yards, par 35-35—70).
Eight qualifying spots and two alternate positions were available at this qualifying site. Players were greeted with unseasonably chilly and rainy conditions for most of the round with temps in the mid-to-lower 50’s.
The eight qualifiers are Daryl Chappell of Dinwiddie, VA (66), Jimmy Flippen, Jr. of Danville, VA (67), Jerry Richardson of Burlington, NC (68), Nathan Stamey of Canton, NC (69), Cortland Lowe of Augusta, GA (70), Kevin Silva of New Bedford, MA (70), Joe Jaspers of Huntersville, NC (70) and Ryan Blaum of Coral Gables, FL (70). Rafael Campos of Puerto Rico (71) is the first alternate.
The eight qualifiers advance to one of 15 sectional qualifiers, 13 of which are held in the United States, one in Japan and one in England. Sectional qualifiers advance to the 109th United States Open Championship at Bethpage State Park (Black course) in Farmingdale, NY on June 18-21, 2009.
Championship Flight:
Robert Surratt took his home field advantage and tasted victory for the first time this season with a stellar one under par 71. Surratt started quickly by birding the first hole and then making an eagle 3 on the par 5 8th hole. Robert finished at 34-37=71 on the day. Joe Jaspers played consistent all day with 36’s on both nines for an even par 72 and second place. Jim Aughtry made triple at the second hole but then fought back hard with 34 on the back side for a 3rd place finish at 74. Jay Kaufman And Michael Bailey rounded out the top five with a pair of 76’s.
A Flight:
The birdie machine Chad Ballard had 4 on the day to help grab his first victory of the season. Ballard fired a 78 to win by one shot. Stan Lucas fired a 79 for second spot and Roger Stevenson cashed in at third place with 80. Andrew Chappuis and John Clark both finished at 81, but it was Chappuis beating out Clark on the card for 4th spot.
B Flight:
Rich Dutcher coming back from Knee surgery also won for the first time this season firing a smooth 78. Dutcher’s strong performance on the back nine is what secured his victory. Scott Ide and Dennis Reames finished only one behind Dutcher at 79. On the card playoff Ide beat out Reames for second place money. Mike Hindmarsh from the Triad tour finished in fourth place with an 81.
C Flight:
Patrick O’Conner won for the second time this season and also received a promotion to the “B†flight. Patrick’s stellar 79 is an automatic promotion and good luck on your continued improvement. William Buie from the Pinehurst tour played well on Saturday and finished in third place with 85. Jack Frazier from the Triad tour finished in third place with 86, while three others tied for fourth spot at 87.
The tours next stop will take us to a favorite stop Statesville CC on May 30 a 1:30pm shotgun start. Please email me back (Yes or No) if you wish to get entered. Don’t wait to long as we are limited to 96 players because of lack of carts.
Note Practice round rates are available now for only $35 (Tuesday-Friday anytime and Weekends in the afternoon!). Also Statesville is allowing you to bring guest to see all the recent work they have done to their great course. The new par 5 13th hole is now open and the greens are in the best shape they have been in years. If you play in a foursome your rate will only be $25 per player.
