David Schmidt, Kevin Ronan, David Johnson, Sam Carpenter & Joo Kim all win at Carolina Lakes!
Champ Flight:
David Schmidt started out this season in fine fashion
posting a 5 under par round of 67.
Schmidt’s round was error free as he posted 3 birdies and eagled the par
five 17th against no bogies on his card. Newcomer Brett Landry had a chance to
threaten Schmidt as he had an 8 footer on 14 to get to four under par, but
after his miss he double 15 and bogied 16 to finish the day in solo second
place with 71. Mike Gentry finished
third beating out Jay Barnes on the card, as both players fired even par rounds
of 72. A special congrats to long term
tour veterans Joe Jaspers and Jim Aughtry.
This weekend they played in the Mid Pines invitational 2 man team event
and they won for the second straight year with rounds of 67-67 for a 2 shot
victory. This team will also go for the
three peat in a few weeks in the Golfweek Myrtle Beach four-ball.
A Flight:
Kevin Ronan is no stranger to winning at Carolina Lakes and
he did so again by only one shot with 75.
Phil Vangeersdaelen has been struggling early this year with back issues
but has it all worked out now and finished solo second with nice round of
76. Mike Nasekos grabbed third place
money at 77 and Mario Mitchell was fourth at 78.
B Flight:
Nolan Elenz, George Shadwick and David Johnson all finished
tied at 79 thus our first sudden-death playoff of the season. After 2 holes Johnson was victorious with a
par, par posting for the win. Elenz
grabbed second and George Shadwick was third.
An unfortunate issued accrued which I need point out to all of tour
members. Mason Hagen also fired a 79 but
was disqualified from the playoff for carrying 15 clubs in his bag the entire
day. Jeff Johnson was 4th at
80 and with this score his overall tour average dropped to 8.7 thus an
automatic promotion to A Flight.
C Flight:
Sam Carpenter won for the first ever on the Golfweek Amateur
Tour by only one shot with 84. Richard
Cairns finished solo second at 85 followed by Mark Sikes at 88 and Columbia
Tour member Richard Ramsey at 89.
Dominic Elia also finished at 89 but was not disappointed loosing on the
card playoff as he won a Super Skin and flight skin worth over $500 for his
hole out eagle at the par four 8th hole! Sam Carpenter also received a promotion to B
flight as again his index dropped below the 14.0 C flight mark.
D Flight:
The tours biggest field ever saw new member Joo Kim win by
four shots at 90. Michael Martin finished
second at 94 followed by Vince Johnson at 95 and Bob Beatty at 97.
