Cowans Ford CC - Recap
119 golfers turned out on a wonderful Saturday afternoon at our first Private Course on Lake Norman. The weatherman had predicted the possibility of a small rain shower through the day, but happily for all of us, this did not occur. Although the course was dormant due to the recent spell of cold weather leading up to the event, the greens were in excellent condition.
In the Championship Flight, this battle came down to the last hole. Mike Gentry was holding a small 1 shot lead heading into his final 2 holes (18 and 1) both par 5's. Mike came away with a bogie on 18 to put him in a Tie for first, then on Hole number 1 (his final hole), he made Birdie to reclaim the lead and take home top honors. Mike finished the day at 73 (+1), Joe Jaspers making his 2018 debut, finished solo second at 74 (+2), Jeff Malone had his best finish of the year capturing 3rd place with a 75 and Jay Barnes took home 4th place honors beating David Schmidt on a scorecard playoff (both players shot 77 (+5)
In the A Flight, 18 holes was not enough. After 18 holes, three golfers went back on the course to see who would take home top honors. Jason Breedlove, Paul Aschmann and Darryl Moss all tied for the lead with scores of 80 (+8). It only took one hole as Darryl Moss was able to par the difficult par 4, 10th hole and walk away the winner. Jason took home second beating Paul using the scorecard playoff to settle 2nd and 3rd. Corey Davis took home 4th place honors beating Michael Brandenburg in another scorecard playoff. Both Corey and Mike both shot 81 (+9).
In the B Flight, Dan Ahlers continued his strong play of late and takes home the top prize with a winning score of 82 (+10). James Burrell continues to play well and finished solo second shooting 83 (+11). Dirk Krause finished solo third with a score of 84 (+12), Daniel (Flip) Flippo was solo 4th with a score of 85, but that is not all. Flip's number was drawn prior to the round and was awarded $265 in Cash as the winner of our 50/50 draw (all proceeds going to Stand Up To Cancer). 5th and 6th came down to another scorecard playoff as Chuck Young and John Rinaldi both tied at 86 (+14). Chuck took home 5th and John 6th place respectively.
In the C Flight, Christian Casper came away with a convincing victory shooting 82 (+10). I'm going to guess that the shoulder surgery is working quite well. Ken Young and Glen Nutting, who played in the same group, tied for second shooting 88 (+16). Ken took home second using the scorecard playoff method of tiebreaking. Fourth place was also decided using this same method, In the end it was Scott Cain who edged out Michael Guarino, both players shot 90 on this day.
In the D Flight it was newcomer, Shannon Osborne who walked away with a 4 shot victory shooting a great round of 91. Dustin McClanahan was solo second shooting 95 (+23) and rounding out the top 3 was Raymond Hoerr shooting a score of 96 (+24).
