River Run Results
It took two weeks to get this tournament completed after the postponement earlier in the month due to thunderstorms. It started out partly cloudy and turned into mostly sunny by the end of the round. 76 players across 4 different tours competed on this day at River Run on a course that was in fantastic shape. Our tour got the benefit of playing this course a day after the North Carolina Am was played and to say the greens were fast would probably be an understatement.
In the champ flight, it came down to the last Hole again. Jay Barnes and David Schmidt were tied after 17 holes and it appeared that after the Tee ball of Jay on the 18th may have went into the lake that the win would have been going to Schmidt, but the ball was found, close to the hazard, and instead of playing it safe, Jay decided to go for the green. He missed the green, but cleared the lake and then proceeded to chip in for an Eagle to win the event shooting an Even par round of 72. Dave finishing on the par 5 2nd hole unfortunately made a bogie and had to settle for 2nd with a round of 75. Taking home 3rd place honors was Jobe Dyson with a round of 76 and rounding out the top 4 was Jerell Fields who beat out Randy Hodges on a scorecard playoff with a score of 83. Champ flight played the Medal Tee’s today.
In the A Flight, it was myself (Phil VanGeersdaelen) that took first place on this day shooting on of my best rounds ever on tour with a 75. Judd Dye took home solo second with a 77, and Ivan Jones (Central Carolina) and Jon Ervin tied at 78 for 3rd and 4th, but it was Ivan who took home 3rd on the scorecard playoff. Just like the champ flight above, this came down to the last few holes of the tournament as well. With the Live Scoring in place, we knew exactly where we stood on the back nine and there were 9 players within 1 shot of the lead with 6 holes to play. The turning point in the match came on 16. While Ivan was lining up a birdie putt on the 16th, I was looking to get up and down from about 40 yards short of the green. My mindset was to get it close and salvage a par. As luck would have it, I chipped in for birdie (could not see the ball go in the hole) and Ivan just missed his birdie.
In the B Flight it was Rengan Srinivasan who got his second victory in 2017 shooting a round of 83. Duane Fisher (Central Carolina) took home second with a round of 84. Another new member in 2017, Kevin McCabe whose wife is 8 ½ months pregnant, came away with 3rd place beating Allen Hagen in a scorecard playoff. Both players shot 87.
In the C Flight it was John Andersen who had quite a day. Not only did John win with a round of 87, but…he also got a Closest to Pin prize on Hole 14 and Flight skin for a total of $140 cash. My fellow Northstone member, Phil Waldier, finished second with a round of 90. Michael Martin took home 3rd with a round of 92 and rounding out the top 4 was Glen Nutting with a round of 93.
In the D flight it was Jon McIsaac making a successful return to the tour with a winning score of 89. New tour member, Jacobi Jones took home second with a round of 95 and Alan Salcedo, also making his 2017 debut took home 3rd place with a score of 103.
On a separate Note, David Schmidt (Champ Flight) is on his way to Salem Country Club, Peabody, Mass to compete in the U.S. Senior Open. David was the medalist at his qualifier shooting 67 at THE HOMESTEAD (CASCADES COURSE) in Hot Springs, Va.
Dave, from all of on the Charlotte Tour, Good Luck!
