Northstone CC - Recap
99 players from 4 regional tours + 4 guests came out and
took part in the event at the P.B Dye designed course in Huntersville on
Saturday. Based on scoring, all flights
came down to the last hole or in some cases the 19th hole in order to decide
the winner.
In the Championship Flight is was Joe Jaspers who birdied
hole 18 to secure the victory. Joe's 1
over par 73 was 1 shot better than John Heffernan and Dennis Reames who both
shot 74. Dennis had the lead most of the
day but an untimely double bogie on 18 cost him the title. In the scorecard playoff, John took home
second and Dennis 3rd. Rounding out the top 4 was Jim Aughtry with a 3 over par
75.
In the A flight, it took 1 extra hole to decide a winner
today. Tom Chambers trailing by one
coming into his 18th hole, the par 3 5th hole, knowing he needed birdied, took
dead aim and knocked it to 6 feet 11 inches and sank the birdie putt to put him
in a tie with Chad Hagerman who still had to play the 5th. Chad made par which forced the playoff. On the first playoff hole (18), It was
Chambers who once again came thru under the pressure with a solid par to
win. Both players shot 4 over par 76 to
force the playoff. Matt Hendon was 3rd
with 78 and Ian Eidy (Central Carolina) shot a 79 and won a scorecard playoff
for 4th place over myself.
In the B flight, again it was a tie at 81 after 18 holes between
Kirk Tatge and Dan Ahlers. Again both
players went back out to the difficult 18th hole to settle the score. It only took one and Kirk came out on top. Dale Ambrose came in 3rd with an 82, but had
the tournament title within his grasp until an untimely shot that shall not be
named happened on his second shot on #10 (his last hole) and went out of
bounds. Dale ended up with a double
bogie and 1 shot out of the playoff shooting 82. Terry Upright rounded out the top 4 with an
83.
In the C flight, it appeared that we were going to another
playoff when Northstone Member, Scott Cain double bogied his final hole putting
him in a Tie with Larry Hinson, who still had the same hole to play. Unfortunately, Larry came up with the same
result on the hole and Scott secured the victory with a score of 86. Larry was solo second with 88. Glen Nutting and Tony Pharr tied for 3rd with
89, but it was Glen taking the larger prize using the scorecard playoff method
of tiebreaker.
In the D flight is was Will Anderson from the Central
Carolina tour that came home victorious on this day. Will started out strong but the heat and the
difficulty of the course finally caught up with him and he held on for 1 shot
victory shooting 94. Toby Strickland
finished solo second with a 95. 3rd
place went Richard Zonjic due to his final hole. Richard did what needed to be done on his
18th hole (the difficult 17th par 3). He
knocked it stiff winning the closest to the pin, then proceeded to make the
putt, winning him a flight skin and finally his final total of 96 put him in a
Tie for 3rd which won over Mark Stone on the scorecard playoff, Using the
Scorecard playoff, it took 3 holes and the score on 16 to decide the winner as
both Mark and Richard had tied on 18 and 4.
The big news of the day was that we had 2 carry overs in our
skins pots. There were no winners in the
Champ and A flight skins due to the Tom Chambers birdie on #5. With the live scoring, it appeared that Hole
#5 was going to hold up for the only Flight and Super skin on the day, but with
Toms last hole birdie, we now have a $430 carry over into our next event (Cabarrus)
and an $820 Super Skin Carryover for Cabarrus.
The 4 closest to the pins today were worth $92 each and like
most events this year have been won by members of different flights. Today we had a winner from Champ Flight, A
Flight, B Flight and D Flight. Only C
Flight was shut out on this day.
As always, thanks for all your support and be sure to sign
up and pay for Cabarrus CC for the 26th of August. We have a limited field for this event (96)
due to cart restrictions at the course. With the Skin pot carry overs, I'm
certain that we will sell out and start a waiting list. Due to this, I will require payment for the
event when the entry is submitted (no exceptions). This is the only way to guarantee your spot.
