The Golfweek Amateur Tour starts 20th season in 42 cities!
Local golfers will again have a Tour to call their own. Entering its 20th season, the Golfweek Amateur Tour presented by Edwin Watts returns with impressive schedules for all the tour cities in 2014. The Tour has just finished up its largest National Championship ever in Hilton head, SC. This years Tour Championship included over 800 players playing 54 holes of competitive stroke play golf.
The Golfweek Amateur Tour is for amateurs of all ages and abilities. Members are placed in one of five flights based on handicaps. Flights are: Championship (0-3.9 handicap), A Flight (4-8.9), B Flight (9-13.9), C Flight (14-18.9) and D Flight (19 and up). This flight structure will ensure competitive play within each flight.
The tournament format is gross stroke play with USGA rules in effect. A software program tracks each player’s handicap to ensure participants are placed in their proper flight. The Tour’s goal is to keep each player’s tournament handicap accurate and in turn, insure each flight’s integrity.
“The Tour provides everyday golfers a chance to compete like the pros,” says Dennis McCormac, founder of the Golfweek Amateur Tour. “You don’t have to be a scratch golfer to join the Golfweek Amateur Tour; it is the Tour for the rest of us.
At all Golfweek Amateur Tour events, the top golfers in every flight win gift certificates from Edwin Watts and other local retailers, while all participants earn points toward a season-long points championship in their flight. The Golfweek Amateur Tour Amateur Tour hosted over 700 events in 2013 producing 32,000 tournament rounds for its members.
Golfers may join the Tour at any time for a yearly membership fee. That fee includes a welcome bag with a year’s subscription to Golfweek magazine, USGA handicap card, hat, tour membership card and other golf items. The membership fee allows members to play in their local tournament schedule, as well as other Golfweek AGT events around the country.
Entry fees for the Golfweek Amateur Tour tournaments range from $70-$125. Those fees include cart, green fees, range balls and prizes. Results and points standings are posted within 48 hours at: www.amateurgolftour.net.
Golfers who finish in the top 10 in points in their flight receive invitations to represent their home Tour at the 54 hole Golfweek Amateur Tour Championship on Oct. 17-19th at nine different courses in Hilton Head, S.C. The 2013 Tour Championship hosted over 800 players from around the country, making it the largest amateur event ever held on Hilton Head Island.
During the 2014 season, the Golfweek Amateur Tour will continue its team effort the fight to “Stand up to Cancer”. The Tour’s initiative to fight against cancer was driven initially by the passing of fellow Tour director Roger Mitterling in 2009. The Golfweek Amateur Tour will continue its support of Stand Up To Cancer with donations being accepted through the website and at tournaments. We invite you to join our team, and give all you can to give others the chance to swing another day.
