Thanks to all for the turnout this weekend, thankfully we did not get rain, BUT sat the heat was a little tough. But all got through it pretty well. Both courses played well and looked like they were in good shape. It looks like we have our own version of Lucas Glover, with Jeff Wassil winning Flight I by one point from the big boys, with Bob Vislocky in 2nd . Pretty good competition that really tightened up after the 4th match. In Flight II Ryan Bland was the winner after getting the lead from Tom Garceau who led for three rounds. In Flight III Al Glander, the elder statesman had pretty impressive win over the young guys. In Flight IV Matt Mollohan from the Columbia tour was the winner by 2 points over Grandpa Eric Johnston. And in Flight V Lyle Waddell from Columbia was a one point winner over Mike Bennett. The Championship shoot-out started on the front nine, with the 5 flight winners, Flt I Jeff Wassil, Flt II Ryan Bland, Flt III Al Glander, Flt IV Matt Mollohan, and Flt V Lyle Waddell. All players received a stroke for the first three holes. They teed off in that order, Lyle’s drive went into the lateral hazard on the right, then his third shot went, a short distance, then into the front trap and he was on the green in 5…. And was the first eliminated. At the second hole Matt Mollohan hit his drive into the lake fronting the tee, and then hit a tremendous drive allowing him to get to the green in four and two putted for a 6. Ryan Bland hit his drive into the trap left of the fairway and hit into the hazard with his 2nd shot and he got to the green in 4 and two putted for a 6. Both players chipped off with Bland getting closer, and Mollohan was eliminated. At the third hole par three, Al Glander pushed his tee shot to the hazarrad on the right then wound up with a 5, both Wassil and Bland parred the hole .. Glander is eliminated. The fourth hole par 5 both Wassil and Bland hitting good drives, Wassil hit his second shot short of the green, Bland’s third shot was short of green, and Wassil hit his third shot about 12 feet made the birdie putt and won the Championship, and entry fee for the Amateur Golf Tour championship in October. We still had trouble with the pace of play Sat ……. Part of it was due to the way the pairings are set up, but also some was due to slow play in some of the groups. I will work on the pairings and hope next year we can get it in better shape. I think match play is the best format in golf and who ever developed this format makes it great, because you get to play all 5 rounds. But if I could make an observation, while riding around during the event it seemed to me not everyone was really aware of how match play is played …… Medal play you play the golf course, Match play you play your opponent. And in some case I could tell the player was caught up in playing the course. Also in match play, because you play an opponent head to head, it makes you concentrate more on your game and especially on how your opponent is doing. Also knowing how you stand during each hole is important for how you play, and it can help with speed of play too (knowing when to pick up). Also one last note on the set up for flights …… Players were placed in flights based on their AGT index NOT what flight they played in on the tour. And if I get the pairings right and everyone plays up to there index, we will have tight matches. So on the sheet for results I will also show the AGT index of players in all flights.
